Sometimes I feel like there are two completely different versions of founder life happening at the same time.
The unglamorous reality
Last month I posted a vlog about what I was actually working on. Spoiler: it wasn't sexy at all.
I'd been heads down for weeks rewriting HelpKit's entire codebase to support multiple languages. Not exactly the kind of work that gets you excited to jump out of bed in the morning.
But here's the thing - it was the most requested feature. Users needed it. So I had to build it.
That's the reality of building products. A huge chunk of your time goes to stuff that's necessary but boring. Refactoring code. Fixing edge cases. Making things work in different browsers.
The kind of work nobody celebrates but everyone expects to just... work.
The exciting launches
Fast forward a few weeks and suddenly I'm posting about launching HelpKit for mobile apps on Product Hunt.
React Native SDK. 60-80% fewer support tickets. "I think I COOKED something special."
Still me, same founder, same product, completely different energy?!
This is the stuff that feels amazing to share. The polished feature launches. The metrics. The "we're live" posts.
Both are real, embrace it
The weird thing is both versions are completely authentic.
Yes, I spend weeks in the trenches doing unglamorous technical work that most people would find mind-numbingly boring.
And yes, I also get genuinely excited when I ship something cool that solves real problems for people.
The boring rewrite work? That's what made the mobile SDK possible.
The exciting launch? That's what makes all the boring work worth it.
I think a lot of founders only show one side or the other. Either they're always grinding and suffering, or they're constantly celebrating wins.
Reality is you need both. The tedious foundation work and the exciting feature releases.
Just don't expect them to happen at the same time. Embrace both.
